Simplicity, a sense of calm, a well-managed restaurant, and good value for the money are the hallmarks of this beach front inn whose sprawling, low-slung design is reminiscent of a Spanish hacienda.

Charela Inn sits on the main Negril beach on 3 acres of landscaped grounds. The building's inner courtyard, with a tropical garden and a round fresh water pool, opens onto one of the widest sandy beaches in Negril.

Try for 1 of the 20 or so rooms with a view of the sea. Accommodations are generally spacious, often with hints of Jamaican character in their wicker or Jamaica-made mahogany furnishings and ceiling fans. A few of the rooms have mahogany planks covering the ceilings. Each has a private patio or balcony.

Le Vendome Restaurant, facing the sea and the garden, offers a sophisticated combination of upscale French and low-down Jamaican cuisine. Several times a week during high season, the hotel offers some kind of live entertainment.
