In a city where purely pleasant restaurants have become increasingly rare, Il Valentino feels like an oasis. It is neither a small, cramped space nor one of those noisy factories. The timbered ceiling and terra-cotta floor give the room a cool rustic feeling. But the restaurant's appeal is mostly due to its admirably ambitions. Il Valentino wants to feed you well. Il Valentino serves simple, tasty Tuscan fare. The artichoke salad is delicious, and the Caesar salad is impressive. But it is the pastas that really shine. Try the handmade garganelli, little quills tossed in a classic white veal, prosciutto and mortadella ragu. Main courses tend to be straightforward. Grilled lamb chops and osso buco are excellent. You go because the food is consistently good and you know you will be able to hear your friends when they talk.

In the ground floor of the historic Sutton Hotel, Il Valentino functions both as an unpretentious trattoria for tony Sutton Place locals as well as a reliably satisfying destination for those seeking well conceived, tasty Tuscan cuisine. The terra cotta tiles on the floor evoke the cuisine's rustic origins and give the dining room and bar area a warm, comfortable feeling, even while the conscientious service and starched linens show that the restaurant sees itself as a serious place to dine. If you go frequently you'll likely see many of the same faces in the evening. Entrees are artfully presented, with attention paid to color and shape, but come with minimal, if any, sides. Simplicity is favored.. a meat and a sauce, for example, over complex compilations of different tastes. What they really excel at here are the made-fresh-daily homemade pastas in small servings, as a separate course. You're not likely to leave disappointed.
